James Hardie just named Iron Gray its Color of the Year for 2026, and honestly, we saw this one coming. We’d already had a handful of clients asking about a darker charcoal option before Hardie made it official.
Belk Builders has installed Hardie® Plank siding all over Charlotte and South Charlotte for years now, and colors go in and out of style pretty fast in this business. This one seems different. Iron Gray is a deep, saturated charcoal from Hardie’s Statement Collection®, and we’ve already put it on brick ranches in South Charlotte and a couple of the newer farmhouse-style builds out in Waxhaw. It works on both, which isn’t something you can say about most trendy siding colors.
What Makes Iron Gray Different?
Iron Gray, the HEX code is #535756, if you want the exact number. In person, it reads more sophisticated than cold, not the flat battleship gray you sometimes see with darker siding. On a two-story colonial, it makes a real statement. On a smaller cottage, it still adds depth without tipping into full black, which a lot of homeowners worry about once they start looking at samples up close.
One thing we always bring up with clients: trim choice changes everything here. Pair Iron Gray with something like Hardie® Trim in Arctic White, and you get that sharp, high-contrast look — think classic New England farmhouse but built for the Piedmont. Or skip the contrast entirely. Iron Gray siding with Iron Gray trim, or even cedar details, gives you a moodier, more modern look, and we’re seeing more of that monochrome approach show up in the newer construction around Lake Norman and Ballantyne.
Does It Hold Up in a Charlotte Summer?
This is usually the second question we get, right after “how much.” Dark siding has a reputation — people assume it’ll fade or go chalky after a couple of brutal Piedmont summers, and frankly, with some products, that reputation is earned.
Hardie’s ColorPlus® Technology is the reason we’re not worried about it here. The color is baked onto the fiber cement in a factory under controlled conditions, rather than sprayed on after installation, as with many painted sidings. That process is backed by a 15-year warranty against fading, chipping, and cracking. We’ve got Hardie siding we installed years ago that still looks close to day one, and that’s really the whole pitch for going with ColorPlus over a field-painted product — you’re not signing up to repaint in five years.
Is Iron Gray Actually Right for Your House?
We won’t tell every client to go dark just because it’s trending. Sometimes it’s the wrong call, and we’d rather say so up front than sell you something you’ll regret. A few things worth thinking through first:
- Your roof. Iron Gray generally looks best against a lighter roof or true slate gray. Darker roofs can still work, but you’ll want enough trim contrast to keep the whole house from blurring together.
- How much sun does your lot get? Homes tucked under mature trees tend to show off a deep color like this better than a house baking in full sun most of the day — the shading adds dimension.
- HOA rules. If your neighborhood is one of the stricter HOAs around South Park, Myers Park, or Blakeney, check the exterior color guidelines before you fall in love with anything.
Honestly, the best way to know is to see it against your actual house — your brick, your roofline, your landscaping. We bring samples out for exactly this reason, and more than once, a client has walked in dead set on one color and left choosing something else entirely.
Get It Installed by People Who Actually Know Hardie Products
Picking the right color only gets you halfway there. Hardie® Plank isn’t vinyl, and it must go up according to James Hardie’s specs or you risk voiding the warranty and, frankly, the finished product just won’t perform the way it should.
